Postdoc Fellowships

There are currently two postdoc positions available in the HEPCAT group: the NRF 2020 postdoctoral fellowship and the VC2030 Future Leaders postdoctoral fellowship.

Postgrad Scholarships

Postgraduate Scholarships in the High Energy Physics, Cosmology & Astrophysics Theory (HEPCAT) group at the University of Cape Town (UCT)

The High Energy Physics, Cosmology & Astrophysics Theory (HEPCAT) group in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is offering postgraduate scholarships funded by the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) of the National Research Foundation.

The research priorities of the grant are on the science of the HIRAX experiment, understanding Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) and the cosmological implications of FRBs as well as on multi messenger astrophysics and using gravitational waves as probes of gravitational theory. Students with interests in any of these areas are encouraged to apply.

For more information on the activities of the HEPCAT group, see http://hepcat.group. Our members include Shajid Haque, Julien Larena, Jeff Murugan, Kurt van der Heyden, Will Emond, Jonathan Shock and Amanda Weltman. There are additional opportunities to perform joint work within other group research areas, including amplitudes in astrophysics, machine learning and theoretical cosmology more broadly. Students will be supervised by Prof Amanda Weltman, but likely co-supervised by another group member, project dependent.

The appointment must comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practices for the postgraduate sector, and is subject to the rules and approval of the University of Cape Town and the National Research Foundation of South Africa.

Academically excellent students who have completed/are completing an undergraduate or Honours degree, which is relevant to the focus areas for 2020, may apply. While preference will be given to South African citizens and permanent residents, exceptional foreign students who can bring a unique skill to the group will also be considered, provided they are registered at the University of Cape Town on a full-time basis.

The value of a PhD scholarship is R100 000 per year, and is tax-free.
The value of an MSc Scholarship is R70 000 per year, and is tax-free.
The value of an Honours Scholarship is R70 000 per year, and is tax-free.
Equipment and travel funding will be provided where relevant for the training.

Interested students should send a CV, a statement of your research interests (2 pages max), academic transcripts, as well as arrange for 2-3 letters of recommendation to be sent to melissa.largier@uct.ac.za. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis from 16 February 2020 until the positions are filled. Please use the following format in the subject line: YOURNAME, Degree Level, 2020. The position is available for this academic year. Any queries can be sent to Melissa Largier at melissa.largier@uct.ac.za. Eligible and complete applications will be considered by members of the HEPCAT group.

The University of Cape Town reserves the right to:
● disqualify ineligible, incomplete and/or inappropriate applications
● change the conditions of award or to make no awards at all

Short Visitorship

Visitorships in the High Energy Physics, Cosmology & Astrophysics Theory (HEPCAT) group at the University of Cape Town, South Africa

The High Energy Physics, Cosmology and Astrophysics Theory group in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town (UCT) invites applications to visit and collaborate with group members. The group has 2 core faculty members, Amanda Weltman and Shajid Haque, and associate members include Jeff Murugan, Jon Shock, Julien Larena, Will Horowitz and Kurt van der Heyden.

We will consider visits of senior PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for up to 6 months, as well as both short term faculty visits and hosting self-funded sabbatical visitors.
Interested candidates should get in touch with Melissa Largier at melissa.largier@uct.ac.za to discuss possibilities. These visitorships will be appointed and offered on a rolling basis.
